Sony Australia has just confirmed that its Google TV set-top box is now available for sale at retail. Previously the device was only available when bundled with specific Sony Bravia TVs.
For $299, the Sony Google TV will be available at Sony Centre stores, online at www.sony.com.au and at Harvey Norman from 1 October.
If you haven’t heard of Google TV before, it’s basically an set-top box that can transform any TV into a Smart TV with internet connectivity.
Some of the features include: the ability to download apps and games from Google Play, full Google Chrome web browser and YouTube playback. It also includes a Smart remote with full QWERTY keyboard for navigation.
“Sony’s Internet Player with Google TV turns any television into a Smart TV. As well as having access to the best TV internet search experience with Google Chrome’s full web browser, it also provides customers with easy access to the Sony Entertainment Network. Of course, its capabilities will continually grow thanks to the rapidly growing number of compatible apps available from Google Play,” said Sony Australia, group manager, network services and technology, Paul Colley.
“In addition to allowing more people to enjoy content on the best screen in the house where the experience can be shared with others without having to crowd around a small PC screen, Google TV will revolutionise the way consumers experience TV. Traditional and smart TV features offer a “lean-back” experience – you select content and then sit back and watch it. Google TV lets you lean back and watch, and it adds to that a powerful lean-forward interaction with the web.”
